Let BMW Concord, located in the East Bay, explain the brake recall “booster vacuum supply line” effecting the 5 series, 6 series and 7 series supported by BMW of North America, Inc.
This recall covers many of our V8 models and V12 up to November 2009 production 5 series, 6 series and 7 series.
Under some conditions the vacuum booster can get engine oil in it. Oil does NOT get in the brake hydraulic system, but this can cause a hard brake pedal over time causing more force by the customer to stop the car. The brake system will work even without assist from the booster.
The new vacuum line has a valve in it that stops any oil vapors; this will stop the slow buildup of oil in the brake booster.
The problem causing the campaign is that engine oil enters the brake booster vacuum supply line via the brake vacuum pump and contaminates the brake booster, which can damage a membrane contained in there. This can cause the power assist to the brakes to not work, and the vehicle may be hard to stop.
